On Sunday, he expressed support for a national abortion ban after a specific number of weeks, with certain exceptions. However, he did not specify the exact number of weeks, leaving his position on a key US election issue unclear.

Trump was questioned about a New York Times report from February which claimed he had privately expressed interest in a 16-week nationwide abortion ban, with provisions for exceptions in cases of rape, incest, or maternal health concerns. However, he seemed reluctant to publicly discuss the matter to avoid potential alienation of socially conservative supporters.

He Believed Abortions Should be Prohibited

During his interview with Fox, Trump refrained from specifying the gestational point at which he believed abortions should be prohibited, stating that he would be making a recommendation “in a number of weeks.” He expressed confidence that his recommendation would be well received. Trump also highlighted his pride in the conservative shift of the Supreme Court due to his three nominations, which led to the court’s decision in 2022 to eliminate federally guaranteed abortion rights.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, states were given the authority to establish their own abortion laws. Some states implemented near-total bans, while others, such as Maryland, enacted laws to protect abortion rights.
