Gabbard’s Early Political and Military Service

Gabbard’s political journey began at 21 when she was electe to the Hawaii State House of Representatives. After the 9/11 attacks, she joined the Army National Guard. In 2004, she gave up her assured re-election to serve in Iraq with the 29th Brigade Combat Team. Working in a medical unit. Upon her return in 2006. Gabbard served as a legislative aide to Senator Daniel Akaka. Who was then the chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. She later volunteered for a second deployment to the Middle East as a platoon leader.

After witnessing the real cost of war, Gabbard ran for Congress at 31, pledging to honor the sacrifices of her fellow service members. She won a challenging election and went on to serve eight years in the House, where she was a member of the Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Foreign Affairs Committees. Instead of seeking re-election in 2020, she pursued a presidential bid as a Democrat.

In October 2022, Gabbard parted ways with the Democratic Party and became an Independent. Her debut book, For Love of Country: Leave the Democrat Party Behind, was publish on April 30, 2024, and swiftly climbed to number four on the New York Times Bestsellers List.

In August 2024, Gabbard endorsed Trump for a second term and shortly after became a key co-chair of his transition team. On October 22, 2024, she formally joined the Republican Party, praising Trump’s leadership and his work to reshape the party into one that truly represents the people and promotes peace.
