U.S. President Donald Trump said the ongoing war with Iran could end “very soon,” while also calling the operation the beginning of building a new nation. He made these remarks during a press conference at his golf club near Miami, following joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets.
Trump said the U.S. military has made major progress toward achieving its objectives and claimed American forces have destroyed most of Iran’s military capabilities. He added that the operation is close to completion but noted that some critical targets, including electricity production sites, remain for potential future strikes.
Trump Iran War update: president says conflict may end very soon
The president repeated that Washington’s primary goal is to eliminate the threat of Iran developing nuclear weapons. According to Trump, U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities last year delayed Tehran’s ability to produce a nuclear bomb.
Trump also warned Iran against interfering with global oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for international oil transport. He said Iran would face extremely strong retaliation if it attempted to block oil tankers. The U.S. administration has offered risk insurance to shipping companies and may escort tankers through the strait if needed.
Meanwhile, Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as its new supreme leader after the death of his father during the first phase of the U.S.-Israeli military operation. Trump criticized the move and said the leadership change may not bring major reforms in the country.

The president also addressed the bombing of an elementary school in Iran that killed 168 people, including many children. A preliminary U.S. assessment suggested American forces were likely responsible for the strike, although they did not intentionally target the school. Trump said he does not yet know enough details and confirmed that investigators are still reviewing the incident.
Since the war began, seven American service members have died. Trump acknowledged that casualties occur during conflicts but said the families of the fallen soldiers urged him to continue the mission and complete the operation in Iran.
The conflict has also impacted global markets. Oil prices surged due to fears of supply disruptions in the Persian Gulf, though markets later stabilized after Trump suggested that the U.S. could secure shipping routes in the region.
