Taiwan’s Strongest Earthquake in 25 Years, 4 dead Triggers Japan Tsunami Alert

Today in Taiwan, an earthquake struck with varying magnitudes reported by different agencies. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake measured 7.4 in magnitude, while Japan’s Meteorological Agency recorded it as 7.7. This powerful 7.7-magnitude quake occurred in eastern Taiwan shortly before 8 am local time on Wednesday, April 3. It triggered tsunami warnings for Taiwan and southern Japan. The Philippines also issued a tsunami alert and instructed the evacuation of coastal regions following the seismic activity in Taiwan.

Four Suspected Dead in Taiwan Quake, some people Injured

According to Taiwan’s fire department, four individuals are suspected to have been fatally crushed by falling rocks in the mountainous, sparsely populated eastern county of Hualien, where the earthquake’s epicenter was located. Additionally, more than 50 people have been injured, with at least 26 buildings collapsed, over half of them in Hualien. About 20 individuals remain trapped, and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Taiwan Quake Felt in Shanghai, Epicenter Off Hualien Coast make Tsunami Alert

According to the Taiwan Central Weather Administration, the epicenter was situated just off the eastern coast of Hualien County, in the waters adjacent to Taiwan Island’s eastern coastline. Reports indicated that tsunami waves reaching heights of up to three meters were anticipated imminently for isolated Japanese islands in the area, including Miyakojima island. Japanese national broadcaster NHK displayed a banner urging evacuation: “Evacuate!” Additionally, an NHK anchor warned viewers: Tsunami is approaching. Please evacuate immediately. Do not halt. Do not return.
