Russian fighter jet comes close to a US warplane

According to US sources, a Russian fighter jet went dangerously near to a US surveillance aircraft over Syria, forcing it to fly through the tumultuous wake and putting the lives of the four American crew members in peril.

The incident, which occurred shortly before noon EDT on Sunday, was a dramatic escalation in what has been a run of interactions between US and Russian jet in Syria in recent weeks, according to officials. The Russian Su-35 intercept hampered the US crew’s ability to safely operate their MC-12 aircraft, officials said, describing it as a new level of dangerous activity that may result in an accident or loss of life.

Russian fighter jets have routinely harassed US unmanned MQ-9 drones in recent weeks, but the latest incident sparked concerns because it threatened American lives.

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss military operations, would not disclose how near the Russian fighter came to colliding with the US warplane. According to sources, the MC-12, a twin-engine turboprop aircraft commonly employed by special operations personnel, was conducting surveillance in support of operations against Islamic State extremists in Syria.

Russian fighter jets sailed dangerously close to MQ-9 Reapers on many times in the last two weeks, setting off flares and prompting the drones to conduct evasive maneuvers. During the confrontations, US and Russian military personnel converse often over a deconfliction phone line, denouncing the activities of the other side.
