Russian occupation forces in Luhansk used a crane and a dump truck to remove a monument dedicated to the victims of the Holodomor, the man-made famine that killed at least 3.9 million Ukrainians in 1932-33. Russian-appointed acting mayor Yana Pashchenko justified the act, claiming it “insulted the patriotic feelings of the residents.” Russian forces have also destroyed dozens of Holodomor monuments and memorials to Ukrainian cultural figures executed by the Soviet regime in other occupied areas.
Russia Erases Ukraine’s Historical Identity
Since launching a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Russia has not only sought territorial control but also worked to erase Ukraine’s historical identity. Ukrainians continue to resist, driven by generations of trauma under Russian and Soviet rule. Despite heavy losses, they refuse to surrender. Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to end the war by opening negotiations with Moscow, a move many fear could legitimize Russia’s occupation and weaken Ukraine’s sovereignty.

As Ukraine marks three years of war, Russian forces persist in rewriting history by dismantling symbols of Ukrainian suffering and resilience. However, Ukrainians remain steadfast in preserving their national identity and historical truth, determined to prevent Russian aggression from erasing their past.
In addition to destroying historical monuments, Russian authorities have intensified efforts to impose Russian language and culture in occupied areas. Schools have replaced Ukrainian textbooks with Russian ones, and authorities have cracked down on public displays of Ukrainian heritage. Despite these oppressive measures, underground movements and local communities continue to resist, keeping Ukrainian traditions and language alive in defiance of Russian rule.
