LPG Supply Crunch in Hyderabad Shrinks Restaurant Menus

LPG uncertainty in global energy markets has triggered fresh debate in India after government officials and opposition leaders raised concerns about oil supplies and reports of commercial gas shortages. Rising crude prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have created a challenging environment for energy-importing countries, including India, which depends heavily on overseas crude supplies.

Meanwhile, the United States government recently introduced a temporary policy that allows several countries to purchase Russian oil shipments currently stranded at sea. The administration of Donald Trump announced this 30-day authorisation while global markets closely watched the impact of the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Energy analysts believe the decision could temporarily ease supply concerns, even though geopolitical uncertainty continues to influence global oil prices.

LPG Supply and India’s Crude Import Strategy

LPG concerns also reached the Indian Parliament when Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed lawmakers regarding the country’s crude oil supply situation. He stated that India has effectively managed its energy imports despite disruptions in key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the minister, nearly forty-five percent of India’s crude oil imports previously passed through the Hormuz route before the recent crisis began. However, he explained that strong diplomatic engagement led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi helped diversify the country’s oil supply sources and reduce dependence on the vulnerable maritime corridor.

Furthermore, he informed Parliament that non-Hormuz supply routes now account for almost seventy percent of India’s crude imports. India currently purchases oil from around forty countries, which marks a significant increase compared to just twenty-seven supplier nations during 2006 and 2007. Government officials argue that this diversification strategy has strengthened India’s energy security during periods of geopolitical instability.

Political Protests Over LPG Cylinder Shortage

Despite the government’s assurances, the issue of commercial gas availability sparked heated political reactions in Parliament. Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, organised protests within the Parliament complex and demanded clear explanations from the government regarding the reported shortage of commercial LPG cylinders.

Rahul Gandhi criticised the government during the protest and questioned the administration’s handling of the situation. He argued that while the Prime Minister asked citizens not to panic, the government itself appeared concerned about broader economic pressures linked to rising energy costs. At the same time, global oil prices remained close to the psychologically important mark of one hundred dollars per barrel. However, markets showed slight relief in early trading after the United States issued the temporary licence allowing the purchase of Russian oil shipments waiting offshore. Energy experts say such developments could influence market stability in the coming weeks.

Overall, the situation highlights the delicate balance between global geopolitics, domestic energy management, and political debate. As international tensions continue to evolve, governments around the world will closely monitor supply chains to ensure stable energy access for their economies and citizens.
