Putin has stated that if necessary Russia will employ cluster bombs in Ukraine

President Vladimir Putin said Russia has a “sufficient stockpile” of cluster bombs and has reserved the right to use them. If such munitions, which he considers illegal, are used against Russian forces in Ukraine.

Ukraine claimed on Thursday that it had received cluster bombs from the United States, its most important military ally. The munitions are needed to compensate for shell shortages experienced by Kyiv’s soldiers during a counteroffensive.

More than 100 countries have banned cluster munitions because they often emit a huge number of smaller bomblets. These can kill indiscriminately over a large area. Some of them will certainly fail to explode, posing a threat for decades, particularly to youngsters.

When attempting to retake its own territory, Kiev has stated that it will employ cluster bombs to disperse concentrations of enemy soldiers, but will not use them on Russian territory.

“I’d like to point out that the Russian Federation has a sufficient stockpile of various types of cluster bombs.” We have not yet used them. However, if they are utilized against us, we reserve the right to take retaliatory measures.”
