Mexico erupts after El Mencho is killed

Violence erupted across Mexico after authorities killed the country’s most wanted drug lord. Security forces targeted Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, during an arrest operation. However, fierce clashes broke out between his supporters and the army. The confrontation left El Mencho fatally injured in Tapalpa, Jalisco state. Meanwhile, officials confirmed four cartel members died and three soldiers suffered injuries.

Subsequently, cartel members launched coordinated retaliation across at least twelve states. They blocked highways with burning vehicles and spread fear in major cities. Moreover, gunmen appeared openly on streets in Jalisco and nearby regions. Eyewitnesses filmed thick smoke rising above Guadalajara and surrounding areas. Consequently, authorities reported about 250 roadblocks nationwide during the unrest.

Mexico reels from cartel violence

Therefore, Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro declared a statewide code red. He suspended public transport and canceled events and in-person classes. Meanwhile, tourists in Puerto Vallarta described scenes resembling a battlefield. Additionally, attackers set shops ablaze and damaged around twenty bank branches. Security forces later reduced the remaining active blockades in Jalisco.

At the same time, officials arrested twenty-five suspects linked to violence and looting. Eleven detainees allegedly committed violent acts during coordinated attacks. Furthermore, fourteen others allegedly participated in theft and property destruction. President Claudia Sheinbaum assured citizens of strong federal and state coordination. She urged residents to remain calm and stay informed.

Mexico faces wave of retaliation

Meanwhile, several airlines canceled flights to Jalisco amid security concerns. The United States advised citizens to shelter in five affected states. Similarly, the United Kingdom warned visitors to exercise extreme caution. Additionally, US intelligence reportedly supported Mexico’s operation against El Mencho. Officials described the mission as a historic strike against fentanyl trafficking networks.
