The meeting marked a historic moment because a world leader’s spouse presided over a session of the council for the first time. Trump led the meeting on behalf of the United States as it assumed the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month. The presidency allows member states to guide discussions and set meeting agendas. Diplomats and officials attended the session to discuss the protection of children during conflicts. The meeting aimed to encourage international cooperation on safeguarding young people. Participants also discussed ways to strengthen humanitarian responses.
During her remarks, Trump also paid tribute to American service members who lost their lives. She expressed condolences to their families and acknowledged their sacrifice. She praised their courage and dedication while recognizing the difficult circumstances faced by military personnel. Trump wished a quick recovery for those who were injured in recent events. She said her thoughts and prayers remain with affected families during challenging times. Her message honored the commitment of those serving their country.
Trump reaffirmed her advocacy for children around the world and said the United States stands with young people affected by conflict. She expressed hope that peace would soon reach children living in war-torn regions. During the meeting, Rosemary DiCarlo noted that children often suffer the most during armed conflicts. She explained that ongoing military tensions in the region have already disrupted education in several countries. Schools in Israel, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman temporarily shifted to remote learning. She said the disruptions highlight how conflict directly affects children’s education.
Tensions also rose after reports of a strike on an elementary school in the Iranian town of Minab. Iranian officials claimed the attack killed more than 150 people and blamed the United States and Israel. Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, criticized the United States for holding a meeting about protecting children while military operations continued. The United States Central Command said it was reviewing reports about the incident. Meanwhile, Israel’s military stated it had no information about operations in that area. Marco Rubio said the United States does not intentionally target schools.
