Implications for India as president muizzu’s party wins maldives polls

President Muizzu’s party, the People’s National Congress (PNC), has won a significant victory in Maldives’ parliamentary election. With PNC securing 66 out of 86 declared seats, it now holds a strong majority in the 93-seat Majlis. This outcome may reinforce President Muizzu’s pro-China stance, raising worries for India. Muizzu, perceived as unfriendly towards India, could now push policies aligning more closely with Beijing’s interests. This development underscores India’s concerns over Maldives’ growing alignment with China since Muizzu assumed office last year.

The significance of president Muizzu’s party winning maldives polls

The Majlis wields supervisory authority over the Maldivian executive and possesses the ability to block presidential decisions. Prior to this election, the People’s National Congress (PNC) was part of a coalition that held a minority position in the House. Consequently, despite Muizzu holding the presidency, he lacked the political strength to advance his policies.

During that period, the Majlis was predominantly controlled by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), led by Muizzu’s predecessor, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who had pro-India leanings, boasting 41 members. However, this time around, the MDP is facing a significant setback, with reports from the news agency AFP indicating that they have secured victories in only around a dozen seats, signaling a dramatic decline in their political influence.

Male’s increasing alignment with beijing

Since his election in the previous presidential race, Muizzu has intensified the island’s engagement with Beijing, a trend that has been closely monitored by New Delhi. Shortly after assuming office, Muizzu traveled to Beijing and held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Upon his return, he remarked, “We may be small, but this doesn’t give them the license to bully us.” Although he didn’t specifically mention any country, the statement was interpreted as a veiled criticism of India.
