Special Discussion in Parliament
The Lok Sabha will hold a special discussion on Monday to mark Shubhanshu Shukla return from space.
The topic focuses on “India’s first astronaut aboard the International Space Station – Critical role of the space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047.”
Lawmakers are expected to highlight how India’s space missions contribute to technological advancements and national development goals.
The discussion will also recognise Shukla’s achievement and inspire students and young scientists across the country.

Shubhanshu Shukla’s Return and Warm Welcome
Shukla returned to India early Sunday, where a large crowd welcomed him at the airport.
People waved the tricolour, beat drums, and cheered, celebrating his historic visit to the International Space Station (ISS).
His backup astronaut, Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, accompanied him and received recognition alongside Shukla.
Officials emphasised that their mission reflects India’s growing presence in global space exploration and scientific collaboration.
Monsoon Session Amid Political Standoff
The Monsoon Session of Parliament resumes Monday, 18 August, after a brief break.
However, the government and Opposition continue to disagree over a debate on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Despite the political standoff, discussions about space, science, and technological achievements are expected to dominate proceedings.
The session will conclude on 21 August, allowing lawmakers limited time to discuss multiple national priorities.
Shubhanshu Shukla’s Upcoming Engagements
Shubhanshu Shukla is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday before traveling to Lucknow, his hometown.
He will later return to Delhi to participate in National Space Day celebrations on 22-23 August.
Officials said Shukla’s presence will highlight the importance of India’s space programme for scientific research and national prestige.
The mission also demonstrates India’s growing capability in space technology and international collaboration in orbit missions.
Airport Reception by Dignitaries
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and ISRO Chairman V Narayanan welcomed Shukla at the airport.
The reception symbolised national pride and recognition for India’s astronauts and the country’s advancing space programme.
Experts said such missions inspire young scientists to contribute to India’s long-term space and technological goals.
