Authorities in Australia offered humanitarian visas to members of the Iran women’s national football team after the squad competed in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Officials made the offer after the conflict in Iran began while the team was already in Australia. Concern about the players’ safety increased as the squad prepared to return home.
Iran Soccer Team asylum debate grows in Australia
Government representatives met each player individually at Sydney Airport and explained that they could choose to remain in Australia instead of boarding their flight. Several players accepted the asylum offer and decided to stay in the country. The remaining players traveled with the team as planned. One player who initially accepted asylum later decided to return to Iran after discussions with teammates.
The situation gained global attention when the Iranian players stayed silent during their national anthem before their first match. Many observers viewed the silence as a symbolic protest, though the players did not publicly explain their actions.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said the government focused on giving each player a personal choice without pressure. Officials allowed the players to speak privately with interpreters and family members before making their final decision.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities dismissed concerns about the players’ safety and said the country would welcome them back. Australia moved the players who chose asylum to a secure location and promised them housing, healthcare, and support while they start a new life in the country.
