This outcome deals a significant blow to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had aimed to reclaim control of these urban regions.

Istanbul and Ankara Incumbents Lead by Wide Margins in Turkey’s Local Elections

With over 90% of ballot boxes counted, Ekrem Imamoglu, the incumbent Mayor of Istanbul from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), holds a significant lead in Turkey’s largest city and economic hub, as reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency. Meanwhile, Mansur Yavas, the current mayor of Ankara, secured his position with a remarkable 25-point lead over his opponent, according to the results. Overall, the CHP has won municipalities in 36 out of Turkey’s 81 provinces, penetrating several strongholds of Erdogan’s party. The CHP garnered 37% of the total votes nationwide, compared to the president’s party, which received 36%, marking the CHP’s most significant electoral success since Erdogan assumed power two decades ago.
