28 Google workers fired for objecting to agreement with Israel

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., terminated 28 workers for participating in protests against Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion collaborative contract with Amazon.com Inc. aimed at providing AI and cloud services to the Israeli government. The protests, organized by the No Tech for Apartheid group, occurred on Tuesday at Google offices in New York City, Seattle, and Sunnyvale, California. Demonstrators in New York and California conducted a sit-in lasting nearly 10 hours, while others recorded the event, including via a Twitch livestream. Law enforcement arrested nine individuals on trespassing charges on Tuesday evening.

Protesting Google workers Placed on Leave

Google’s Employee Relations group sent a message to several workers involved in the protests, including those not directly participating in the sit-in, notifying them of being placed on leave. In an email obtained by Bloomberg, Google informed the affected employees that it is “keeping this matter as confidential as possible, only disclosing information on a need-to-know basis.

Additionally, four other employees alleged that Google dismissed them for organizing opposition to the company’s collaboration with federal Customs and Border Protection and for other workplace advocacy efforts.
