Germany Will Now Allow Adults To Carry Cannabis

Germany, as of Monday, has become the largest EU country to legalize recreational cannabis, a move that has faced strong opposition from opposition politicians and medical associations. As per the initial phase of the contentious new law, individuals aged 18 and above are permitted to possess up to 25 grams of dried cannabis and grow up to three marijuana plants at their residence.

Cannabis is Legal in Germany

Germany now boasts some of the most progressive cannabis regulations in Europe, joining Malta and Luxembourg, both of which legalized recreational cannabis use in 2021 and 2023, respectively.

In recent years, the Netherlands, recognized for its lenient stance on cannabis, has adopted a more stringent approach to deter cannabis tourism.

As the law came into force at midnight, hundreds of individuals gathered near Berlin’s renowned Brandenburg Gate, with many of them celebrating by smoking joints. One participant, a jubilant 25-year-old named Niyazi, described it as “a little extra freedom.”

Health Organisations have Expressed Apprehensions

The German government, under the leadership of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats in a three-way coalition, asserts that legalisation will aid in curbing the expanding black market for cannabis.

However, health organisations have expressed apprehensions that legalisation may result in heightened usage among adolescents, who are particularly susceptible to health hazards.

Experts have cautioned that cannabis use among adolescents can impact the development of the central nervous system, potentially elevating the risk of developing psychosis and schizophrenia.

Even Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, who is a medical professional, has acknowledged that cannabis consumption can pose risks, particularly for young individuals.

The government has pledged to launch an extensive information campaign to educate the public about the dangers associated with cannabis use and to enhance support programs.

Additionally, it has emphasise that cannabis will continue to be prohibited for individuals under the age of 18 and within a 100-meter radius of schools, kindergartens, and playgrounds.
