PM’s Firm Stand On “Extremists” In Canada

PM Modi emphasized that India-Canada ties are rooted in mutual democratic principles during the meeting.

At the G20 Summit in New Delhi, PM Modi voiced”strong concerns” to Canada’s PM Trudeau about ongoing”anti-India activities” in Canada. He emphasized the need for both countries to work together to tackle these threats. Modi urged collaborative efforts in addressing the issue.

In return, PM Trudeau praised PM Modi for India’s successful G20 Presidency. PM Modi highlighted the foundation of India-Canada relations: democratic values, rule of law, and robust people-to-people ties.

The MEA issued a statement saying, “He conveyed our strong concerns about continuing anti-India activities of extremist elements in Canada. The statement also highlighted the concerning links between these extremist forces and organized crime, drug syndicates, and human trafficking, which should be of concern to Canada as well. It emphasized the need for cooperation between the two countries in addressing these threats.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that a relationship grounded in mutual respect and trust is vital for the progress of India-Canada relations.

Earlier, PM Trudeau had mentioned his numerous discussions with PM Modi on the issue of Khalistan extremism and “foreign interference.” He affirmed Canada’s commitment to defending freedom of expression and peaceful protest while preventing violence. Trudeau also emphasized that one should not perceive the actions of a few individuals as a reflection of the entire community or Canada.

During their meeting, both leaders discussed a wide range of topics related to India-Canada ties in various sectors. PM Modi later tweeted about the meeting, stating, “Met PM @JustinTrudeau on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. We discussed the full range of India-Canada ties across different sectors.”

Before their discussions, Trudeau, along with other world leaders, visited Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi. During Trudeau’s visit to India for the G20 Summit, he recognized India as a crucial partner in advancing shared democratic values. He also acknowledged the substantial Indian diaspora in Canada, which numbers nearly 1.4 million people.
