Tamil Nadu Rains: Heavy Downpour as Low Pressure Intensifies

With a well-marked low-pressure area over the central parts of the south Bay of Bengal. Expected to intensify, Tamil Nadu is gearing up for a spell of intense rainfall. On the morning of October 15, 2024, heavy downpours were recorded in Chennai. The neighboring districts of Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur.

According to a bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this weather system is likely to strengthen into a depression and move towards the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh by October 17. In response to the forecast, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has instructed officials to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu on October 15. This precautionary measure is taken to ensure safety, as the IMD predicts heavy rains for the next four days in these regions.

TNSDMA Activates Helplines as Authorities Prepare for Heavy Rain

The Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority (TNSDMA) has activated several helplines to assist residents during the anticipated heavy rainfall. The State Helpline number 1070 and District Helpline 1077 are available for any emergency assistance. Additionally, residents can contact the TNSDMA via WhatsApp at 9445869848 for updates and queries. For information on relief centers, food supply, and flood volunteers, the public can reach out to the helpline 1913.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged the public to stay vigilant.
