Parts of Maharashtra experienced sudden weather changes on Monday as heavy rain and hailstorms hit several areas, including Pune. The rainfall brought relief from rising temperatures but also disrupted daily life. Many areas reported traffic slowdowns, waterlogging, and temporary interruptions in routine activities.
Meteorologists have linked this sudden weather shift to changing atmospheric conditions over western India. Moisture from the Arabian Sea has moved inland, combining with instability in the lower atmosphere. This combination has created favourable conditions for thunderstorms and hailstorms.
Cloud cover has increased over Pune and nearby regions, including the Western Ghats. Experts expect scattered rainfall to continue throughout the day. In some areas, strong thunderclouds have developed, leading to hail formation. These hailstorms occur when powerful upward air currents carry raindrops into colder layers of the atmosphere, where they freeze before falling to the ground.
Such weather patterns are common during the pre-monsoon season, when sharp temperature differences create instability in the atmosphere. These conditions often trigger sudden storms, gusty winds, and intense rainfall within a short time.
Weather experts have warned that the impact may spread further across the state in the coming days. Rainfall activity is likely to increase gradually, and cities like Mumbai may also experience showers by midweek. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds could affect multiple districts.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, as these conditions may lead to localised disruptions such as waterlogging, traffic congestion, and minor damage. Overall, while the rainfall offers temporary relief from heat, it also highlights the unpredictable nature of pre-monsoon weather patterns in the region.

Storm Pattern Extends Beyond Pune
While Pune and other parts of western India faced sudden storms, northern regions also experienced unstable weather. In Delhi, light rainfall occurred on Monday as the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the national capital.
The IMD has warned residents about moderate dust storms followed by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. Wind speeds may range between 50–70 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 80 kmph. In some areas, lighter thunderstorms with winds of 30–40 kmph are also expected.
An orange alert indicates the need for preparedness, as such weather conditions can reduce visibility and cause disruptions. Strong winds may lead to tree falls, traffic issues, and temporary interruptions in power supply.
Weather experts say that multiple weather systems are currently active across the country, creating a transitional phase between seasons. These systems are affecting different regions at the same time, leading to sudden changes in weather patterns.
Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions during storm activity to avoid risks and ensure safety.
