The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday, December 2, 2024, that the depression resulting from the cyclone storm “Fengal” has weakened into a Well-Marked Low Pressure Area. As of 5:30 a.m., this system was located over North Interior Tamil Nadu after moving westwards from the north coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The weakening of Cyclone Fengal brings some relief, but heavy rainfall continues to affect Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The system’s remnants are expected to influence weather conditions further, with the low-pressure area likely to shift over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea, off the north Kerala-Karnataka coasts, by December 3.

IMD Warns of Heavy Rain
Despite its weakening, the system may still result in significant rainfall in the affected regions. The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious, as localized flooding and waterlogging are possible in low-lying areas. Strong winds and rough sea conditions near the coasts could also pose challenges for fishermen and coastal communities.

Authorities have urged people in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Karnataka to stay updated with weather alerts and avoid venturing into the sea until further notice. The IMD and local administrations are closely monitoring the situation to ensure timely dissemination of information and necessary action.
The weakening of the system indicates a gradual reduction in its intensity, but its impact on weather patterns, particularly in terms of heavy rainfall and wind, remains a concern. Residents in the affected regions should continue to follow official advisories and take precautions to ensure their safety during this period.
