Nagpur Rain Havoc: 461 People Rescued as NMC Responds to 37 Emergencies

Nagpur witnessed widespread disruption on Tuesday as torrential rainfall flooded several low-lying areas and stranded hundreds of residents. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) launched a large-scale rescue operation through its Fire and Emergency Services Department and responded to 37 emergency incidents across the city. Rescue teams safely evacuated 461 people to secure locations while the civic administration kept its entire emergency response system on high alert to handle the worsening situation.

Students Rescued from Flooded Somalwar School

Fire brigade personnel carried out one of the most challenging rescue operations at Somalwar School in Khamla after rainwater flooded the campus and trapped students inside. Using ropes, the rescue team safely evacuated all the children and prevented any casualties. Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare visited the school, reviewed the rescue operation, interacted with worried parents, and assured them that officials had taken every possible measure to ensure the students’ safety.

Rescue teams also reached a school in Narendra Nagar after receiving reports of severe waterlogging. At the same time, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) joined civic officials to rescue people stranded inside Ambazari Biodiversity Park. The coordinated efforts of the NMC and SDRF helped authorities bring everyone to safety despite the challenging weather conditions.

Mayor and Commissioner Review Flood Situation

Nagpur Mayor Nita Thakre and Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar visited flood-affected areas, including Narsala and Hudkeshwar, to assess the situation. They instructed civic officials to remain on maximum alert and provide immediate assistance wherever needed. The administration also urged residents, especially those living in low-lying areas, to contact municipal authorities immediately during emergencies.

As the weather department forecast continued heavy rainfall over the next few days, the district administration declared a holiday for all schools across Nagpur district on July 29 as a precautionary measure.
