IMD issues heavy rain warning; Mumbai-Goa highway reopened

On Friday, most areas of Mumbai experienced light rains with intermittent periods of moderate to heavy showers. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall for the city and suburbs, issuing a ‘yellow’ alert with the potential for extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Previously, a ‘red’ alert was in effect until 8.30 am on the same day. The Mumbai-Goa Highway has now reopened for vehicular movement after being temporarily closed due to heavy rains and overflowing rivers in the coastal Konkan region of Maharashtra.

Heavy Rains and ‘Red’ Alert by IMD in Maharashtra

Parts of Maharashtra, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sangli, and Gadchiroli districts, are still under a ‘red’ alert, as stated by the IMD. Mumbai experienced its wettest July since 1991, surpassing the 1,500 mm mark, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Additionally, four out of the seven lakes that supply water to the city have overflowed in the past week after reaching full capacity.

Meanwhile, knee-deep water accumulated in parts of Thane on Thursday. Hundreds were moved to safer places as incessant rains raised the risk of landslides. A 32-year-old man was swept away in a swollen nullah near a creek in Kalwa town. A 19-year-old man was feared drowned in a dam in Ovla area. Thane and Raigad districts recorded over 100 mm of rainfall Thursday as heavy rain lashed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Heavy rainfall activity is predicted to continue over parts of Konkan & ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra during next 24 hours with gradual reduction thereafter. 

Water stock in 7 lakes reaches 68 per cent

Incessant rains over the past few days raised the aggregate water stock in seven lake. It is providing potable water to Mumbai as it reached 68 per cent on Friday morning. Of these seven lakes, four have overflowed so far.
