Winter Monsoon Sends Temperatures Plunging in Hong Kong
A strong winter monsoon swept through Hong Kong on Thursday morning, driving temperatures down to 12°C in urban areas and as low as 5.9°C in northern districts. The Hong Kong Observatory recorded minimum temperatures of 10°C or below in several locations, with Ta Kwu Ling registering the coldest reading, followed by Sheung Shui. Clear skies and radiative cooling worsened the chill, but authorities reported no major icing on farmland and cancelled the frost warning, while keeping cold weather and red fire danger alerts in place.

Warmer Weekend Ahead, but Dry Weather to Continue
Forecasters expect the cold spell to last until Friday morning, with urban temperatures hovering around 12°C. As the winter monsoon weakens over the weekend, temperatures will gradually rise, with morning lows climbing to about 14°C on Saturday and daytime highs reaching nearly 21°C. Despite the warming trend into early next week, the Observatory warned that very dry conditions will persist, with humidity dropping to around 35 per cent, maintaining an extreme fire risk.
