37 dead, ₹400 crore worth of damage as heavy rains batter Himachal Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department has extended a rain alert for Himachal Pradesh until July 7, forecasting continued heavy rainfall. Relentless downpours have already claimed over 37 lives and caused widespread damage across the state. The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has reported property losses exceeding ₹400 crore, and officials expect the death toll to rise as rescue teams continue their operations.

IMD Alert Till July 7: Mandi’s Thunag Hit Hard, Losses Cross ₹400 Crore

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for the state until July 7, warning that heavy showers will continue. Mandi district has become the worst-hit region, especially the Thunag subdivision, where blocked roads and disrupted electricity and water supply have paralyzed essential services. In a press briefing on Wednesday, DC Rana, Special Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority and Revenue Department, said, “We have already recorded losses of over ₹400 crore in our system, but the actual damage is likely much higher.”

Mandi Devastated: 40 Missing, Roads Blocked, Power Outages

In Mandi alone, authorities have reported 40 missing persons. They have set up relief camps, and the Indian Air Force has air-dropped food packets to the affected areas. “A village in Mandi stands devastated,” confirmed Rana.Senior officials have stationed themselves in the region, and engineers from the PWD, Electricity Board, and Jal Shakti Department are leading the restoration efforts.Rain-related incidents have claimed 37 lives so far, and road accidents during the same period have caused an additional 26 deaths. Across the state, over 250 roads remain blocked, and more than 500 electricity transformers are not functioning.
