Kerala Faces School Closure Due to Heavy Rain Induced Flooding

The IMD has issued a yellow alert today for four districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha. Kerala has been experiencing heavy rainfall in recent days, resulting in widespread flooding and the closure of schools.

District authorities declared a holiday for educational institutions in Kottayam, Vaikom, and Changanassery taluks due to flooding. Authorities have established seventeen relief camps in these areas, offering shelter to approximately 246 people affected by the floods.

The district administration in Alappuzha declared a holiday for schools in Cherthala and Chengannur taluks while supervising relief camps.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted light rainfall in specific districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam on the same day.

IMD issued a yellow alert for four districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha. This alert indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm.

Over the past three to four days, Kerala has been consistently receiving heavy rainfall, resulting in incidents such as uprooted trees, waterlogging, and the collapse of compound walls in various areas.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of major casualties across the state despite the adverse weather conditions.

The continuous heavy downpour had previously led to the submersion of hundreds of acres of paddy fields in Edathua, a small village located in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha district.

The Disaster Management Authority issued a warning, urging residents residing in high-altitude areas to remain vigilant due to the ongoing heavy rains.

In summary, heavy rainfall in Kerala has led to widespread flooding and school closures. They have set up relief camps to shelter those affected by the flooding.
