6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Nepal, Tremors Felt Across Bihar

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck Nepal early Friday morning, shaking the Himalayan region. The tremors jolted several parts of Bihar, including Patna and Muzaffarpur, causing panic among residents.

Epicenter and Timing

News agency Reuters reported that the earthquake originated near Bhairab Kunda in Nepal’s Sindhupalchok district at approximately 2:35 AM. The quake startled people awake and forced many to rush outdoors. Sindhupalchok, a region in central Nepal, has witnessed devastating earthquakes in the past, including the massive 2015 quake that caused widespread destruction.

Conflicting Magnitude Reports

Different seismological agencies provided varying magnitude estimates. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded the quake at 5.6, while India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported a magnitude of 5.5. However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and other agencies confirmed a magnitude of 6.1. Authorities have not yet determined whether multiple tremors occurred or if the variations resulted from different measurement techniques.

Impact and Reactions

Although officials have not reported significant damage or casualties, the tremors triggered panic among residents. People in Bihar, particularly in Patna and Muzaffarpur, rushed out of their homes, fearing aftershocks. Witnesses reported minor cracks in walls and described the shaking as lasting several seconds.

Local authorities in Nepal and India are monitoring the situation closely and preparing emergency response teams for possible aftershocks. Experts have urged residents in quake-prone regions to stay alert and follow safety protocols.

Past Earthquake Concerns

Nepal frequently experiences earthquakes due to its location in a highly seismic zone. In 2015, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake killed nearly 9,000 people and caused extensive damage. Given the region’s history, authorities remain cautious about the possibility of aftershocks or stronger quakes in the coming days.

Officials have advised residents in affected areas to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.
