Unprecedented rainfall paralyzed Dubai, causing widespread flooding across the UAE and Bahrain and resulting in 18 fatalities in Oman. On Tuesday, unusually heavy rain battered, bringing the glamorous city to a halt. In just one day, the desert metropolis received rainfall equivalent to a year and a half, while heavy thunderstorms battered other regions of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates Flooded, Metro Station Submerged
Photos and videos posted on social media depicted flooding at popular shopping centers Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates, with water reaching ankle-deep levels in at least one Metro station. Viral videos showed workers removing water from Chanel and Fendi luxury stores inside a mall, while another video captured water crashing into the showroom of the Danish variety store chain Flying Tiger.

Residents Flood Social Media Amid Deluge, Sheikh Zayed Road Traffic Jammed
Residents of Dubai inundated social media with videos and pictures of the deluge. A long traffic jam clogged the flagship Sheikh Zayed Road, connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi. On Tuesday, Dubai received 5.59 inches of rainfall, surpassing the city’s annual average of 3.73 inches. The storms and torrential rain affected the UAE, Bahrain, and parts of Qatar after ravaging Oman, where they triggered deadly floods and stranded dozens. In neighboring Oman, heavy rain claimed the lives of 18 people.
