Cyclone Dana: Trains Canceled as Odisha and Bengal Prepare for Landfall on October 25 with Winds Reaching 120 km/h

The governments of Odisha and West Bengal have begun evacuating residents and have opted to close educational institutions in at-risk areas as Cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall early on October 25, bringing wind speeds of 100-110 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 120 km/h.

The Odisha government has planned to shift more than 10 lakh people from 3,000 villages in 14 districts to relief camps, with half of the state’s population likely to be affected by the impending cyclone, news agency PTI reported.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said her government is ready to face the cyclone Dana.

The cyclone Dana has also affected the train movement with several trains cancelled. Train No. 06087 from Tirunelveli Junction – Shalimar Special scheduled to leave Tirunelveli on October 24 has been cancelled.

Similarly, the train from Bhubaneswar to Rameswaram (Rmanathapuram), Superfast Express scheduled to leave Bhubaneswar on October 25 has been cancelled.

Cyclone Dana: Here are top 10 updates

  1. The Indian Coast Guard is on high alert, mobilizing vessels and aircraft to prepare for Cyclone Dana, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Odisha and West Bengal.
  2. IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra indicated that the entire eastern coast from Puri in Odisha to Sagar Island in West Bengal will be affected by the cyclone.
  3. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi urged MLAs to assist in rescue and relief efforts as the state braces for the cyclone’s impact.
  4. Cyclone shelters, flood shelters, and other facilities have been designated to accommodate vulnerable populations, with provisions for food, water, and sanitation.
  5. The Odisha government has put 14 districts, including Angul, Puri, and Cuttack, on alert based on IMD forecasts.
  6. All educational institutions in these 14 districts will be closed from October 23 to 25 due to the impending cyclone.
  7. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced school closures in seven districts from October 23 to 26 as a precaution.
  8. The districts in West Bengal likely to experience the most severe effects include South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and Purba Medinipur.
  9. More than 150 express and passenger trains have been canceled by the South Eastern Railway due to the cyclone, with significant cancellations also by East Coast Railways.
  10. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from October 23 to 25 as wind speeds are expected to reach 60 km/h along the Odisha-West Bengal coasts.
