Delhi government alerts NGT, air pollution impacts mental health

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has requested responses from the Delhi government and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) regarding the psychological ramifications of deteriorating air quality, emphasizing the need for an examination of mental health effects. The Delhi government has informed the NGT that exposure to air pollution exacerbates mental health issues in India, resulting in feelings of sadness, cognitive impairments, and a diminished capacity to cope with life’s challenges.

NGT Seeks Analysis on Psychological Impact of Delhi’s Air Quality due to pollution

The NGT, noting the importance of analyzing the “psychological aspect” of air quality decline in Delhi, had requested responses from various authorities, including the Delhi government and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Chairperson of NGT, along with Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, highlighted the health department’s response from the Delhi government, which cited studies demonstrating the negative impact of air pollution on mental health. According to the report, air pollution exposure in India exacerbates mental health issues, causing feelings of sadness, cognitive impairments, and reduced coping abilities.

Call for Detailed Reporting on Unexplained Data Gaps

During the previous hearing on December 19 last year, the tribunal observed that the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) was allocating environmental compensation (EC) funds to certain municipal authorities for road and pavement construction. Expressing doubt over the legality of such disbursements, the tribunal remarked that it could potentially constitute a significant misuse of funds and a serious financial irregularity.
