A 5.3-magnitude earthquake shook Telangana’s Mulugu district early Wednesday morning at 7:27 am, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were felt in Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh, causing panic among residents. Fortunately, no casualties or significant property damage were reported, and authorities are actively assessing the situation. Experts have urged residents to stay cautious and avoid unsafe structures.

Tremors Spread to Neighboring States
The earthquake’s impact extended to parts of Maharashtra, with mild tremors reported in Nagpur, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur districts. Residents in these areas, especially near the Telangana border, felt light shocks. Chandrapur Collector Vinay Gowda advised people to remain calm and move to open spaces during future tremors. Experts noted that seismic waves from quakes of this magnitude can travel up to 300 km from the epicenter.

Rare Seismic Activity in Telangana
Telangana is classified under Seismic Zone II, which is considered a low-intensity seismic zone. Earthquakes are rare in this region, making this event particularly unusual. The last earthquake of similar intensity in Telangana occurred over 20 years ago. The incident has highlighted the need for preparedness in regions less accustomed to seismic activity.

Recent Earthquakes Across India
In recent days, India has experienced other seismic activities. On November 30, a 2.9-magnitude earthquake struck Assam’s Karbi Anglong region at a depth of 25 km. Earlier, on November 28, Jammu and Kashmir recorded a 5.8-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Afghanistan. These events serve as a reminder of the varied seismic risks across the country, with approximately 59% of India’s landmass prone to earthquakes of varying intensities.
