Florida: 100-years-old record broken as rare snow storm hits

A significant snow storm struck the southern United States on Wednesday, with freezing rain and ice affecting areas from Texas through the Deep South, extending into Florida and reaching the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The storm has claimed at least eight lives as temperatures in the region plunged to freezing, accompanied by icy wind chills. The National Weather Service reported that approximately 20 million people are currently under weather advisories and warnings due to the severe conditions.

Worst Winter Storm in Decades Leaves Thousands Without Power and Disrupts Travel

The severe snowstorm sweeping across the southern United States has caused widespread disruptions, cutting power to over 44,000 homes and businesses in Georgia and Florida by Wednesday afternoon. Freezing rain and icy conditions have severely impacted these regions, leading to extensive outages. Emergency crews are actively working to restore power, but ongoing snowfall and treacherous road conditions are slowing their progress.

The storm has also disrupted air travel across the country. Airlines canceled nearly 2,000 flights within, into, or out of the United States by midday Wednesday, according to the online flight tracker FlightAware.com. They also delayed about 2,300 flights, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at airports and throwing travel plans into disarray. Major hubs across the nation are struggling to manage the chaos as airlines work to reschedule flights amid the harsh weather conditions.

In a post on X, AccuWeather stated, “Pensacola, Florida, became an unlikely winter wonderland and shattered a 100+ year old record for snow on Tuesday as 7.6 inches of snow fell. The previous record was 3 inches in 1895.”

“This has been the worst winter storm to hit the Gulf Coast in decades,” Chief Meteorologist of AccuWeather, Jonathan Porter said as reported by USA TODAY.
