Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Calls for Retaining 543 Seats, Demands 33% Women’s Quota

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to permanently retain 543 Lok Sabha seats. He asked the Centre to amend the Constitution and maintain the current distribution of seats among states. Vijay raised the issue after the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution on delimitation. He warned that post-Census delimitation could reduce representation for southern states. He said the Centre should protect the political representation of states that successfully controlled population growth.

Vijay Urges Centre to Freeze Lok Sabha Strength at 543 Seats

Vijay said southern states could lose Lok Sabha seats after the upcoming Census. He pointed to Tamil Nadu’s earlier experience when its representation fell from 41 to 39 seats. He argued that future delimitation should not punish states for implementing successful population-control programmes. The Tamil Nadu government said these states have also achieved progress in healthcare, development and public welfare. Vijay therefore asked the Prime Minister to preserve the existing state-wise allocation of parliamentary seats.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution called for permanently fixing the Lok Sabha strength at 543 members. It also demanded that states retain their current number of parliamentary constituencies. Vijay enclosed the resolution with his letter to Prime Minister Modi. He requested the Centre to introduce necessary constitutional amendments to protect the existing arrangement. The Chief Minister said these measures would help maintain fairness and balance between different regions.

Tamil Nadu CM Seeks 33% Women’s Reservation in Upcoming Elections

Vijay also urged the Centre to implement 33 percent reservation for women in upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He extended the demand to the subsequent Assembly elections across the states. The Tamil Nadu Assembly had included women’s reservation in its recent resolution. Vijay said the government should ensure greater representation for women in elected institutions. He asked the Centre to implement the reservation alongside any future delimitation changes.

Vijay’s letter highlights three key demands from Tamil Nadu ahead of the next delimitation exercise. He wants the Centre to retain 543 Lok Sabha seats and preserve existing state-wise allocations. He also wants 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state Assemblies. Tamil Nadu argues that these measures would protect federal balance and reward states for controlling population growth. The Centre will now have to consider the constitutional and political implications of these proposals.
