The Gautam Budh Nagar Police Station registered the case against the Noida law officer and some land owners in 2021. On Thursday, the Supreme Court constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT), comprising three senior IPS officers from the UP cadre, to investigate the “overall functioning” of the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority .

It also asked the SIT to identify the officers or officials responsible for such exorbitant payments, determine if there was any collusion or connivance between the beneficiaries and NOIDA’s officers or officials, and examine whether NOIDA’s overall functioning lacked transparency in authority and Noida.

When the matter came up for hearing on September 14, 2023, it came to light that the land owners had received numerous instances of alleged excess compensation payments, prima facie, for extraneous considerations and on a quid pro quo basis. The court then addressed the question of whether an independent agency should conduct a deeper probe into NOIDA’s functioning as a statutory authority. Supreme Court forms SIT to probe workings of Noida Authority over compensation to landowners. The charges involved the release of a huge amount of compensation in favor of some landowners who, it was alleged, were not entitled to seek such a higher compensation for their acquired land.
