From summer heat to snowy streets
After years of celebrating Christmas in Australia’s summer heat, one family swapped sunscreen for scarves and embarked on a winter journey through Europe’s famed Christmas markets. They travelled by train across seven countries, tasting local festive foods—from sausages and potato pancakes to flaming mulled wine—while enjoying the lights, music, and traditions that define a European winter. Markets in London and Prague impressed with their scale and atmosphere, but overwhelming crowds often dulled the experience, forcing the family to visit early or leave quickly to escape the crush.

Luxembourg City delivers festive magic without the crowds
Luxembourg City surprised the family with its charm. Tucked between France, Belgium, and Germany, the small capital offered all the magic of a classic Christmas market without the pressures of overtourism. Its Winterlights festival transformed the city into a glowing winter wonderland, complete with artisan stalls, local food, and relaxed public spaces. With short queues, friendly vendors, and plenty of space to explore, Luxembourg became the most enjoyable stop of the trip—proving that Europe’s best Christmas market doesn’t have to be the most famous; it just has to let visitors fully experience the magic.
