WhatsApp is preparing a major platform overhaul with the introduction of usernames and unique IDs. The company plans to roll out this feature globally by June 2026. This update will allow users to send messages and make voice or video calls without sharing their phone numbers. As a result, the platform will shift from its long-standing phone number-based system to a more flexible identity model. This change also brings WhatsApp closer to other modern social platforms that already use usernames for communication.

Moreover, WhatsApp will allow both individual users and businesses to create and reserve unique usernames. Businesses can choose names that reflect their brand identity, which will help users easily recognize and connect with them. A company spokesperson confirmed the development and said the feature will improve both privacy and user experience. At the same time, WhatsApp will keep this option completely voluntary. Users who prefer the traditional method can continue using their phone numbers without any interruption.
