Delhi’s ₹1.2 Cr Cloud Seeding Experiment Flops Saurabh Bharadwaj Mocks the Effort

Delhi’s cloud seeding trial on Tuesday aimed to induce artificial rain but failed completely. The Delhi government spent approximately ₹1.28 crore on two trials, conducted in parts of northwest Delhi and the National Capital Region. IIT Kanpur operated a Cessna aircraft, firing 16 silver iodide flares over Burari, Mayur Vihar, and Noida. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa called the exercise “successful” despite the absence of rainfall. Officials said the trials helped reduce particulate matter in targeted areas.

Delhi’s Cloud Seeding Trial Fails Despite ₹1.28 Crore Expenditure

The Delhi Cabinet approved ₹3.21 crore for five cloud seeding trials this year. The government planned two previous trial dates but postponed them due to southwest monsoon rains and unfavorable timing. IMD reported low moisture content of 10–15 percent, which prevented heavy rainfall. Authorities said the trials assessed rainfall potential under real-life Delhi humidity conditions. Nine to ten additional trials remain scheduled in the coming days.

AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj criticized the BJP government for wasting taxpayers’ money. He held press conferences and shared social media posts mocking the trials. Bharadwaj questioned why the government conducted experiments despite IMD predicting no rain. He called the trials a “smoking gun” exposing alleged misuse of public funds.

Political Reactions and Controversy Over Public Funds

The previous AAP government first proposed cloud seeding in winter 2023 but could not execute it due to permission delays. BJP leaders claimed their government acted decisively where the previous administration had only planned. Delhi’s authorities emphasized science-guided experimentation for long-term pollution control.

Officials said the first trial concluded by 2 pm, while the second flight took off from Meerut around 4 pm. Manjinder Sirsa noted IIT-Kanpur predicted rainfall could occur within 15 minutes to four hours post-trials. However, IMD confirmed no rainfall occurred in Delhi until late evening, highlighting low humidity limitations.
