“So Far, So Same”: Samsung Takes a Dig at Apple’s First Foldable iPhones

Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market with its first iPhone Duo, challenging established rivals. Samsung quickly mocked Apple for entering a market where Android manufacturers have dominated for years.

During Apple’s Wednesday reveal event, Samsung’s United States social media team published several sarcastic posts. One standout post on X accused Apple of reheating technology that Samsung had already introduced. Samsung also joked that Apple’s new device looked familiar, comparing the launch with another Sims sequel. Another post teased Apple for waiting so long while competitors already developed phones that fold three ways. Samsung highlighted its technological lead by emphasizing the progress manufacturers have made with advanced foldable designs.

Apple Bets on Refinement to Challenge Foldable Rivals

The company also mocked Apple’s accessories, suggesting customers received condiments instead of substantial technological improvements. Samsung summarized its criticism with one simple phrase, saying Apple’s foldable technology looked remarkably similar. Samsung’s confidence comes from its substantial experience after launching the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. Since then, Samsung, Google, and Motorola have released several generations of foldable smartphones worldwide. These manufacturers have gradually improved hinges, displays, durability, weight, and overall usability across newer foldable models.

Despite competitors’ criticism, Apple believes its carefully refined foldable design can deliver a superior experience. Apple expects its engineering approach, combined with strong privacy protections, to help differentiate the device. The $1,999 iPhone Duo features rounded edges and opens into a spacious seven-point-six-inch display. Users can view the large internal screen horizontally or vertically depending on their preferred viewing orientation. When folded, the device provides a smaller external display for convenient everyday smartphone tasks and interactions. Apple describes the unfolded Duo as its thinnest iPhone, emphasizing portability despite its folding architecture. However, several Chinese manufacturers already offer foldable smartphones with slimmer bodies than Apple’s latest device. Apple therefore enters a competitive market where rivals possess years of experience refining foldable smartphone technology.
