A major controversy has erupted in Kerala over an AI-generated video, and police have registered an FIR against tech platform X (formerly Twitter) and one of its handles. The video allegedly portrays the Prime Minister and the Election Commission of India (ECI) in a misleading way. The case comes at a sensitive time as the state heads into elections next month. This raises concerns about its impact on voters and democratic institutions. Moreover, officials warn that such content can create confusion, influence public perception, and even trigger unrest or a riot situation.
According to reports, the video shows a purported Election Commission letter. The letter carries the seal of the BJP’s Kerala unit. The clip runs for about 1 minute and 17 seconds. It quickly went viral on the platform and triggered a political storm. As more users shared it, the reach increased rapidly. However, even after authorities flagged the issue, the original handle did not remove the video. Officials have also linked the content to possible riot intent, which further intensified the controversy and drew criticism.

Meanwhile, Kerala Police’s cyber wing took cognisance of the matter and launched an investigation. Officials said they flagged the issue through official channels. This included the Election Commission. After verification, authorities concluded that the content could mislead the public. It could also weaken trust in constitutional bodies. In addition, it may affect free and fair elections. As a result, police registered a case in Thiruvananthapuram and began a detailed probe.
Furthermore, officials stressed that AI-generated content can have serious consequences. It can shape public opinion and spread misinformation quickly. Therefore, the cyber wing has started tracing the origin of the video. Investigators are also studying how it spread across the platform. They are checking whether any coordinated effort helped amplify the clip.

Legal action and investigation underway
Furthermore, the FIR names an X account along with X Corp and others as accused. Police said the accused uploaded the video with the intention of creating unrest. They also pointed out that the platform allowed the content to circulate. This happened even after directions to remove it were issued. Authorities have now sent legal notices under the Information Technology Act. They have asked for the video’s immediate removal. At the same time, officials are working to identify those responsible.
Additionally, officials said they took urgent steps under the Model Code of Conduct. These steps aim to stop further spread of the clip. They also advised the public to stay cautious. People should avoid sharing unverified or misleading content. This is especially important during the election period. The issue first came to light when CPI(M) flagged a related document on X. The document linked to a 2019 letter with an incorrect BJP Kerala seal. Authorities later called it a clerical error and corrected it promptly.
