Reliance Jio issued notice over noise pollution from Pune office

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a notice to Reliance Jio Info comm Ltd, located at Rajiv Gandhi IT Park, Hinjewadi, near Pune, over noise pollution caused by chiller fans (cooling systems) installed at its office. The MPCB’s action followed complaints that noise exceeding permissible decibel limits was causing inconvenience to people living near the office.

Nandini Chakraborty, a resident of Blue Ridge Society, filed such a complaint with the MPCB in 2023. Subsequently, MPCB officials conducted an inspection at Jio’s office and found that the noise levels had reached 74 decibels.

MPCB Directs Reliance Jio to Submit Action Plan

According to MPCB officials, the permissible noise levels in residential areas are 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels at night.  while for industrial areas, the limits are 75 decibels during the day and 70 decibels at night.An official said that a hearing in the case was held at the MPCB headquarters in Mumbai via videoconferencing on December 26, 2024, with Reliance Jio officials in attendance. The board then issued a notice directing the company to submit within seven days an action plan to reduce noise pollution. Additionally, the company was given three months to install a noise reduction system.

He warned that failure to comply with the board’s instructions would lead to legal action. Additionally, the company was given three months to install a noise reduction system. Speaking to The Indian Express, a Reliance Jio spokesperson said the company would adhere to the prescribed timeline. “We have been instructed to submit a written response within seven days and to implement corrective measures within three months. We will comply with all the necessary precautions,” the spokesperson said.
