Lawsuit Claims Apple’s Best-Selling Product Poses Cancer Risk

Apple is accused of exposing users to cancer in a new lawsuit filed in the US. The lawsuit claims Apple’s “Ocean,” “Nike Sport,” and “Sport” Watch bands contain high levels of toxic PFAS chemicals. PFAS, known as “forever chemicals,” are linked to various health problems. These chemicals persist in the human body and environment, giving them their nickname.

The lawsuit is based on a recent study of 22 watch bands from various US companies. The study found that 15 of the 22 contained harmful PFAS chemicals, including some made by Apple.

Lawsuit Accuses Apple of Hiding PFAS in Watch Bands

A lawsuit filed in California on Tuesday claims the Sport, Ocean, and Nike Sport Bands contain high PFAS levels. The suit also alleges Apple knowingly withheld information about harmful PFAS in these products, despite promoting the Watch as health-friendly.

The lawsuit claims Apple hides the presence of PFAS at the point of purchase and elsewhere. It argues Apple could have used safer manufacturing alternatives to avoid this hazard. The lawsuit also accuses Apple of violating consumer protection laws by misleading consumers about health, wellness, and sustainability.

The lawsuit seeks class certification, which is like a mini-trial in which the allegations are examined and argued by each side’s attorneys. It also seeks an injunction to halt the sale of the alleged PFAS-containing watch bands and monetary penalties, the outlet reported.

In a statement to Daily Mail, Apple asserted that its Watch bands are safe for users. The company added, “We conduct rigorous testing with independent labs to analyze the materials in our products, including Watch bands.”

Apple has claimed its Watch bands are made from fluoroelastomer, a synthetic rubber with fluorine but no harmful PFAS. The company asserts that fluoroelastomer is safe and thoroughly tested to meet health standards.
