Instagram has confirmed a major change to its messaging system. The platform will stop supporting end-to-end encrypted chats soon. The company said the feature will disappear after May 8, 2026. This update will affect users who rely on extra privacy in their conversations.
Instagram currently allows some chats to use end-to-end encryption. This technology protects messages with a special key. Only the sender and receiver can read those messages. External parties cannot easily intercept them. However, Instagram will soon remove this option from the platform.
The parent company Meta confirmed the decision through a notice on its website. The company also guided users on how to save their data. According to the notice, Instagram users can download their messages and media before the change takes effect.
The platform advised users to check their affected chats. If needed, they must download messages and files they want to keep. Some people may also need to update the Instagram app first. The company said this step ensures the download process works properly.

Users who depend on encrypted chats may need to explore other services. Some messaging platforms still provide strong privacy protection. For example, WhatsApp offers full end-to-end encryption by default. Other alternatives include Signal and Telegram. These apps continue to support encrypted communication features.
Instagram Removes Encryption Feature
Reports suggest that Instagram decided to phase out encrypted messaging because of low usage. Many users apparently did not adopt the feature widely. As a result, the company chose to discontinue it.
Regulatory pressure may also influence the decision. Governments and regulators around the world have raised concerns about encrypted messaging systems. Authorities believe such technology could sometimes hide illegal activities. Some officials worry that criminals may use encrypted chats to share harmful or unlawful content.
Because of these concerns, tech companies face growing scrutiny. Policymakers want stronger oversight of digital communication tools. This situation has created challenges for platforms that provide private messaging services.
Despite the change, Instagram will continue offering normal chat functions. Users will still send messages, photos, and videos through the app. However, these chats will no longer use the same end-to-end encryption system.
Industry experts believe this move may push privacy-focused users toward other apps. Platforms that emphasize secure communication may see increased demand. At the same time, Instagram will focus on improving other features within its messaging system.
The update marks another shift in how large tech platforms handle digital privacy. As technology evolves, companies must balance user security, government regulation, and platform demand. For now, Instagram users who prefer encrypted chats will need to consider different messaging options.
