Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Monday said that Google Search logged its highest-ever traffic in 25 years of its existence during the nail-biting FIFA World Cup final. On Sunday, Argentina overcame a few tense moments to defeat France in a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout, fulfilling Lionel Messi’s lifelong dream of winning the FIFA World Cup.
During the #FIFAWorldCup final, Pichai tweeted, “Search recorded its highest ever traffic in 25 years; it felt like the entire world was searching on one subject.” He earlier said that it was one of the greatest games ever.
“Well played Argentina and France. Jogo Bonito. Nobody deserves it more than #messi, in the greatest ever to play the game. What a swansong,” posted Pichai. Sergey Brin and Larry Page created Google Search in 1998. Google Search holds a monopoly over the market in 2022 with a share of more than 90%.
Pichai was responded to by Lex Fridma, host of the Lex Fridman Podcast and research scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US: “With a shared passion for the game, more than a billion people watched. Football is genuinely a global game that unites people, and that is its best quality.”
According to another Pichai supporter, “Google did provide in terms of trustworthy real-time information.”
