Google abruptly withdrew from a $100 million Pentagon contest to build voice-controlled autonomous drone swarm technology after initially advancing in the competition. Sources said the company informed the US government on February 11, only weeks after submitting its proposal. Internal records showed Google reviewed the project through an ethics process before exiting. Officially, the company cited limited resources for the withdrawal.
The Pentagon launched the challenge through the Defense Innovation Unit and US Special Operations Command. The project aims to let commanders control drone swarms using spoken commands that convert into digital instructions. Later stages of the six-month contest will focus on targeting, coordination, and mission execution. Officials see the technology as a major step in future warfare systems.
Google’s decision disappointed some employees involved in the proposal. It also highlighted internal tensions over working with military and classified defense projects. Hundreds of Google AI researchers recently urged CEO Sundar Pichai not to allow the company’s AI tools for classified US defense missions. Many workers fear advanced AI could be used in lethal autonomous weapons.

Google Strengthens Pentagon Ties
At the same time, Google has slowly expanded ties with the Pentagon in recent years. The company updated an existing contract to provide certain AI models for lawful government use. Google said it supports national security responsibly without creating custom military systems. It also said AI should not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight.
The issue reflects a wider debate across Silicon Valley as tech firms weigh profits against ethical concerns. OpenAI, Palantir, and xAI advanced in the drone swarm contest, while Anthropic was not selected. Earlier this year, Anthropic also clashed with the Pentagon after refusing to support fully autonomous weapons systems.
Google has faced similar controversy before. In 2018, workers protested Project Maven, where the company helped the Pentagon analyze drone footage with AI. Google later stepped back from that contract, but in recent years it has increased defense work through new public-sector programs and military partnerships. Its entry into the drone swarm contest signaled that shift before the sudden exit.
