Chinese Robodog Row Rocks Galgotias AI Summit

Authorities on Wednesday asked Galgotias University to vacate the AI Impact Summit Expo, alleging the institution caused a “national embarrassment” by presenting a Chinese-made robodog as its own. People familiar with the matter said officials took exception after claims surfaced that the showcased robodog was sourced from a Chinese company.

The controversy erupted after a viral video showed Professor Neha Singh introducing the machine as “Orion” and stating that the Centre of Excellence at the university had developed it. She highlighted the robodog’s surveillance and monitoring capabilities and said it could move freely across the campus.

Soon after the clip went viral, several viewers alleged that Unitree Robotics had actually manufactured the robot. The claims triggered sharp reactions on social media and sparked a broader debate over the university’s presentation at the summit.

Professor Singh denied receiving any directive from authorities to vacate the event. She said authorities had not officially informed the university of any such decision and described the institution as responsible and committed to academic integrity.

In a late-night statement, the university rejected what it called a “propaganda campaign” against it. It clarified that it never claimed to have manufactured the robodog and said its focus remains on training students in AI programming using globally available technologies and tools.

The institution added that its goal is to equip students with hands-on experience and innovation skills. It warned that negative narratives could demoralize students who are striving to learn and build expertise in advanced technologies.

Unitree Robotics manufactures a range of four-legged robotic dogs designed to mimic animal movement and perform tasks such as industrial inspection, surveillance, and entertainment. The company has gained global attention for offering such robots at comparatively lower prices than competitors like Boston Dynamics, known for its robotic dog “Spot.”
