Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is moving towards a fully contactless travel experience using facial recognition. The idea is simple yet transformative. Passengers may soon travel internationally without showing passports or boarding passes, as their face becomes the main identity at checkpoints. IndiGo, Digi Yatra, BIAL and IATA are working together on this initiative to simplify the travel process.
The partners have already completed successful trials at the airport, marking a first for India. The trial covered the full journey, from booking to boarding. The system used face-based biometric verification at every step. It replaced physical documents with a secure digital identity linked to the passenger’s face. As a result, travellers moved across checkpoints faster and more smoothly without repeated checks.
Face-based system explained
Firstly, the system follows a privacy-focused digital identity model that puts passengers in control of their own data. Travellers can decide when and where to share their personal information. It uses a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) framework, which securely stores identity data and allows instant verification when needed. Therefore, the system reduces dependency on manual checks and improves efficiency across airport operations.
Moreover, the technology connects airline apps directly with airport systems to create a unified platform. This integration allows automatic syncing of boarding passes and travel details in real time. Passengers no longer need to upload documents repeatedly or present them at every step. Consequently, the entire travel process becomes faster, smoother and more convenient, especially during peak travel hours.

Why it matters for future travel
On the other hand, this initiative builds on the Digi Yatra system that already operates successfully for domestic flights in India. Now, authorities aim to extend the same convenience to international travel, which is often more complex and time-consuming. This effort also aligns with IATA’s global vision to create standardized contactless travel systems across countries, enabling smoother cross-border movement.
In addition, Bengaluru airport is witnessing a steady rise in international passenger traffic, which increases the need for faster and more efficient systems. This biometric solution can significantly reduce queues, shorten waiting times and improve passenger flow throughout the airport. It can also make the overall travel experience less stressful and more user-friendly. If authorities implement this system on a larger scale, it could redefine air travel by making it faster, simpler and almost completely paperless for passengers worldwide.
