Apple warns indian users of potential pegasus-type spyware on iPhones

The company has not attributed the recent wave of attacks to any specific stakeholder. Last October, it had issued a similar notification to Opposition leaders across parties from Congress’s Shashi Tharoor to AAP’s Raghav Chadha to TMC’s Mahua Moitra alerting them to a “potential state-sponsored spyware attack” on their iPhones.

Apple Clarifies, No Specific State-Sponsored Attacker Identified

Apple sent the threat notification emails to impacted users in India at around 12:30 am IST on Thursday (April 11). The exact number of recipients who received the notification from Apple remains unclear. The notification email from Apple informs you that they have detected a mercenary spyware attack targeting the iPhone associated with your Apple ID (xxx). This attack appears to be aimed specifically at you due to your identity or activities. While achieving absolute certainty in detecting such attacks is not always possible, Apple expresses high confidence in this warning and urges you to take it seriously.

Apple Warns of Targeted Mercenary Spyware Attack on iPhones

According to Apple’s threat notification, mercenary spyware attacks, such as those utilizing Pegasus from the NSO Group, are exceptionally rare and significantly more sophisticated than typical cybercriminal activity or consumer malware. These attacks involve substantial costs and are individually directed against a very small number of individuals. However, the targeting is continuous and occurs on a global scale.
