PM Narendra Modi Backs Open Hormuz as India-UAE Ties Grow

India and United Arab Emirates strengthened their strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Abu Dhabi amid rising tensions in West Asia. Both countries signed multiple agreements covering defence, energy, infrastructure, trade, and technology cooperation. The visit came shortly after the UAE faced Iranian missile and drone attacks.

During talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, PM Modi stressed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain “free, open and safe.” He strongly condemned attacks targeting the UAE and assured full Indian support for peace and stability in the region. Modi said India stands “shoulder to shoulder” with the UAE during the ongoing crisis.

The two leaders discussed the broader impact of the West Asian conflict on global energy and trade. PM Modi praised the UAE’s restrained response to recent attacks and offered India’s support in efforts to restore regional peace. He also emphasized the importance of uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for global energy and food security.

Energy cooperation emerged as a major focus of the visit. India and the UAE agreed to expand their strategic energy partnership through new deals involving crude oil, LNG, and LPG supplies. The UAE also agreed to increase its participation in India’s strategic petroleum reserves to 30 million barrels through collaboration between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

The UAE additionally committed investments worth USD 5 billion in Indian infrastructure and financial institutions. Major investment plans included support from Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Emirates NBD, and International Holding Company. These investments will target sectors such as infrastructure, banking, and finance.

India and the UAE also signed a framework for a Strategic Defence Partnership. The agreement focuses on defence manufacturing, maritime security, cyber defence, training exercises, secure communications, and advanced technologies. Both countries described defence cooperation as a key pillar of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Apart from defence and energy, both nations announced agreements related to shipbuilding, trade, and supercomputing.
