Xi Jinping won’t attend Delhi G20 Summit

Xi Jinping is the second leader to miss the India summit;Vladimir Putin informed PM Modi of his absence last week.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Premier-Li-Qiang will represent China at the 18th G20 Summit in Delhi this weekend.

President Xi Jinping won’t attend, as China avoids sending its top two leaders abroad simultaneously, especially to the same event. Beijing won’t have both its most influential leaders abroad together, ruling out Xi Jinping’s presence.

Quoting Mao Ning, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council, will attend India’s 18th G20 Summit. The invitation is from the Indian government, scheduled for September 9-10, aiming to consolidate consensus, instill confidence, and foster development.

“China has always placed high importance on and actively participated in relevant events… in attending this meeting, Premier Li Qiang will convey China’s thoughts and positions on G20 cooperation, pushing for the G20 to strengthen unity and cooperation, and working together to combat global economic and development challenges,” the spokesperson was quoted by news agency AFP.

China is ready to collaborate with all parties to ensure the G20 Leaders’ Summit succeeds, aiding global economic recovery and sustainability. They aims to actively contribute to these objectives.

Mr. Xi Jinping’s absence

No explanation was provided for Mr.Jinping’s absence, and he is expected to miss the ASEAN and East Asia summits in Indonesia. Jinping’s non-attendance at these events in Jakarta later this week is anticipated.

Mr Qiang will represent China on both occasions, news agency PTI reported.

Chinese state media Global Times said on X (formerly Twitter) “China looks forward to the G20 New Delhi Summit reaching a consensus on tackling challenges in the economy and development, conveying confidence to the outside world and promoting shared prosperity and growth.”

Confirmation Mr Jinping will not be at this year’s G20 Summit comes after days of speculation to that effect and shortly after a brief global row over a new “standard map” that claims Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin, as well as territory from other nations, as its own.
