Pakistan coach Gary Kirsten acknowledged that the team put undue pressure on themselves during the T20 World Cup 2024 match against India. The errors made by the players led to significant consequences. There were few positives to highlight as Pakistan faced their second consecutive defeat in the T20 World Cup 2024, losing to India by 6 wickets on Sunday. This result jeopardizes Pakistan’s chances of qualifying for the Super 8.

Head coach Gary Kirsten admitted that the players placed unnecessary pressure on themselves. Jasprit Bumrah’s economical three-wicket haul tightened the grip on Pakistan’s batters, while Rishabh Pant’s aggressive, match-saving innings led India to a narrow victory at a packed Nassau County Stadium. This win keeps India’s World Cup hopes alive with two group stage matches remaining.
Pakistan: Gary Kirsten said Certainly a disappointing loss
In the post-match press conference, Kirsten addressed the performance by saying, “Absolutely correct (about players putting excessive pressure on themselves). These players are all experienced internationals, and they understand that there will be pressure when they don’t perform at their best.

This is understandable, but many of these players have extensive experience in T20 cricket globally over the years, and it is up to them to determine how they will advance their game.”
Kirsten mentioned that the team was instructed to aim for occasional boundaries, capitalize on loose deliveries, and rotate the strike effectively while chasing.
“Certainly a disappointing loss,” Kirsten added. “I knew that 120 would not be an easy target. Even if India only scored 120, it was always going to be challenging. But at 72 for 2 with six or seven overs remaining, we were in a strong position. It’s disappointing that we couldn’t finish the game from there.”
The former South African cricketer also questioned the team’s decision-making, implying that such mistakes are unacceptable in international cricket.
