The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a significant change in playing conditions, specifying that umpires will now only consider side-on replays for stumping situations in the Decision Review System (DRS) referrals. This adjustment, effective from December 12, 2023, means that the caught-behind scenario will be assessed separately. If a team wishes to review a caught-behind decision following a stumping, they must now use a DRS option for the caught-behind appeal independently. In a series against India last year, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey frequently utilized reviews for caught-behind after a stumping without utilizing the team’s DRS option.

Under the recent amendment by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the appeal for stumping will now exclusively feature images from the side-on camera. Umpires will solely focus on these images and will not assess for a snick. The modification narrows down a stumping review to specifically examine whether the batsman is stumped, eliminating the possibility for the fielding team to obtain a free review for other types of dismissals (e.g., caught behind) without opting for a player review. The ICC’s new rule restricts the scope of the review to the stumping aspect, preventing teams from leveraging the review process for different modes of dismissal without making a deliberate player review choice.

ICC: Concussion Replacement Rule Modifications
The ICC has also brought in more clarity in concussion replacement rule. Now, the substitute player will not be permitted to bowl if the replaced player was suspended from bowling at the time of the concussion.Similarly, the global governing body also has limited to four minutes the time set for on field injury assessment and treatment.
In addition to the modifications introduced by the ICC, the BCCI has opted to uphold the ‘Dead Ball’ rule and the restriction of two bouncers per over. These rules, initially enforced during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy last year, will persist in the upcoming Ranji Trophy, commencing this Friday.
